When you relayed your story to me I remember the gardens. I remember many summers when Mami and I would take home lots of fresh fruits and vegetables from your father's garden. I remember him coming over to our house in Coral Gables and getting cuttings of our avocado tree. He was always at home "tilling the soil". What was strange was the fact that Mami was also a "tilling the soil" person and when they would talk about that they got along. But, that was the only time! As I write this I have a mental picture of your Dad in our back yard in Coral Gables, sleeves rolled up, jars full of cuttings and a giant smile on his face. Funny, how nice to remember him this way! I remember he once tried to get my Mom to grow onions - and he succeeded somewhat. However, she harvested them too soon - they were great in salads!
I know your Mom kind of followed my Mom - but what was my Mom following? I went to 8 different schools before I went to High School. Now mind you, this is not counting the bad experiences at the two boarding schools (one in New Jersey and one in Puerto Rico). For some reason my mother always had the wanderlust - like the time she up and moved to Venezuela to be with Letty! I am still in awe over that one - but Frankie can tell you more about that one - I seem to have blocked it out.
Strange as it may seem Frankie went to our old house in Bayamon recently and he too was overtaken with emotion because the house looked pretty much the same - and yes Mami's legacy (her plants and flowers) were still there. Wish I could have gone with him - sometimes a trip down memory lane can be the best medicine of all!
Thanks Carl.
