Ok - here goes - Carl Jr. and I were dressed in white clothes (not really Sunday best - but we were going somewhere). Titi Rafa (Carl's mother) let us go outside but told us "under penalty of death" NOT to get dirty. Carl and I walked down the street where they were doing some construction - and of course we had to go and sit on the dirt bank (red clay!!!!!!!!!!!!) and see what they were doing - we also decided to throw rocks or something...I think Carl remembers this more than I. Well, soon, we heard Titi Rafa calling us and we dusted ourselves off (we were both pretty dirty by this time) and happily went to his house.
The first words out of her mouth were "CONO, CARAJO, PUNETA - didn't I tell you kids NOT to get dirty!!!!" "Ave Maria Purisima, mira lo que ustedes han hecho" The other words escape me - all that I can tell you is that the words did not stop until we were bathed once more and put on clean clothes - which made her very angry because we were late - wherever we were supposed to be. I believe she kept it up most of the day - and of course, I was the older one - so I was supposed to be more responsible!!!! Oy Vey - that day was a nightmare!!!! Oh yes Carl - the words really are a combination of damn, damn it, etc. (Ave Maria Purisima is - loosely translated - Holy Mother of God). I think - does anyone else want to help me out here?
