When I decided to come out to California I did so thinking it would be a good vacation, time to spend with some friends and then I would go back to good old New York.
The trip out (driving) was uneventful and getting here was again - uneventful. Visited friends, went to Northern California - almost stayed there - loved the weather. But decided Southern California was the place for me.
During the first week I was in California I saw all of these signs saying Burritos and Tacos. Since I came to CA in 1967 Taco Bell was not the international franchise it is today - sooooo - when I saw these signs I wondered why they were selling little donkeys and heels (from shoes - those types of heels).
The day came when someone invited me to go with them to Taco Bell. I was not a happy camper - I was wondering why on earth anyone would want to eat at a place where they sold little donkeys and heels!
I walked in and tried to be confident and self assured. Inside, I was dying - what do I do if they offer me "little donkey meat?" Well, when I looked up there were pictures of these things called burritos and tacos - I was so relieved I let out the biggest sigh - and later, as I was munching on the new culinary repast I had found, I started laughing to myself and with my friend. She had no idea what I was talking about - but when I called my Mom she knew and we always had a laugh over that.
Now Taco Bell is known everywhere - the word "taco" is not only for a heel. Burritos are not only little donkeys and I can laugh at my beginnings in California.
